Tama is pretty inspirational. Not only does he have a voice like no one else I know (check out the YouTube clip above), but he sounds like an all around nice guy as well. I’ve never met him in person, but the amount of people I’ve mentioned his name to and got the immediate “oh, he’s such a lovely man!” response to is crazy. Definitely only 2 degrees of separation in the creative community in New Zealand, if that.
Tama managed to raise over $8,000 on PledgeMe to fund the recording costs of his next album, Fill Up the Silence. He did a lot of planning before putting his project up, made a video pitch, got an article in Volume, and throughout the project blogged and facebooked about the experience.
We asked him to share a few tips and thoughts on the experience:
What did you like about pledgeme?
Firstly the team at pledgeme were extremely helpful in understanding the platform and also suggesting ways to maximise impact and delivery. Secondly, I like the fact that it is a New Zealand based company which for some reason feels a lot safer than using an offshore site like Kickstarter.
How did you find the experience?
Nervewracking right before I published the project but immensely happy once it got going.
Any tips for newbies?
Be generous with your rewards and definitely make a video that gives people a dynamic sense of your project.
I say crowdfunding, you say: Crowd pleasing.
